Grind Coffee wins Tesco partnership

You can now find FuturePlus member, Grind Coffee, in Tesco stores across the UK.

Grind coffee pods were the first in the UK to be certified home-compostable, and the brand recently announced a partnership with Tesco to stock its products in 635 stores across the UK.

The pods are 100% plastic and aluminium-free, made only from organic matter (PHA), offering a sustainable alternative to the millions of plastic and aluminium pods that end up in landfills every day and take hundreds of years to decompose.

Unlike other plant-based pods, Grind coffee pods have an oxygen barrier that keeps customers’ coffee fresh for months without losing its fresh flavour.

More than 80% of ESG professionals fear data collection for CSRD reporting will be a challenge

Workiva’s third annual 2024 ESG Practitioner Survey, which surveyed over 2,200 people across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, has found that more than 4 out of 5 professionals involved in corporate reporting say that collecting accurate data to comply with the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will be challenging.

Despite this, most companies plan to align their reporting with the new regulation, the survey found, even if not yet required to do so by law.

CSRD, which came into affect at the beginning of 2024, will significantly expand the number of companies required to provide sustainability disclosures, from around 12,000 to over 50,000. It will also introduce more detailed requirements for reporting on company impacts on environmental, social and sustainability-related risk topics.

Businesses lobbying UN to include ‘Plastic Credits’ in new treaty

Companies are lobbying the UN to include "plastic credits" that would allow them to offset their plastic use by paying for waste reduction projects elsewhere.

However, environmental groups have warned that this could result in a rise in harmful practices like burning plastic waste, which can release toxic chemicals.

According to a Greenpeace report, Danone explored using plastic credits in Indonesia but halted plans after local residents complained that a plastic waste facility was causing pollution and health problems.

A new study has found that fewer than 60 multinational companies are responsible for more than half of the world's plastic pollution, with six companies accountable for a quarter.

Negotiations on the UN plastics treaty are still ongoing.
